History of The Slate Workshop

Designers/makers of fine lettering and designs in Welsh slate since 1985.

Richard and Fran Boultbee started the Slate Workshop when they moved to Pont Hywel Mill in Pembrokeshire in 1984 from a holding 3 miles away.
After 28 years of hard but enjoyable work, when they built up an enviable reputation for high quality slate products and excellent service, they finally decided to retire and handed over to myself 'Ben Thomas'. I will run The Slate Workshop from my premises in Five Roads, near Llanelli.

The slate is sawn to size, then shaped and prepared using hand tools.
The computer layouts are done on paper and checked for letter spacing and positioning etc before engraving the slate.

Artwork can be computer generated but is more often hand drawn onto the slate, then engraved.

After engraving, the lettering and any designs I often paint or hand gild with gold leaf, to highlight them.

The range of Welsh slate items include not just slate names and numbers, business and commemorative plaques, but also slate clocks and barometers, wedding gifts with a differnce, vases and lampbases, tealights and cheese boards, bookends and bowls, tableware and benches, Celtic plaques and bird baths.

I hope to emulate the way in which both Richard and Fran worked and like to work closely with my clients - I belive each piece is a personal item - so I don’t have standardised order forms.

Please contact me to discuss your requirements and I can then give you a price and delivery date for your order.
